The benefits of modern society can frequently result in hazardous by-products. Managing these hazardous waste elements in a secure manner needs specific training. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was only eight years old, in 1978, when the Love Canal disaster and the “Valley of the Drums” disposal site highlighted the necessity for the control of hazardous components. OSHA used the requirements for cleaning up military bases, such as Hanford where the A-Bomb was designed, as a base. Along with other organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), OSHA developed the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standards.
